More than 220,000 citizens vote in runoff of local elections in Chisinau till 19:00

Chisinau, 3 June /MOLDPRES/ - More than 220,000 citizens participated in the new local polls in Chisinau till 19:00, which accounts for more than 35 per cent.  Representatives of the Chisinau district electoral council made statements to this effect at a news briefing today.  

The electoral authorities informed that, till present, no incidents had been recorded and neither contestations had been submitted.

More women than men came to vote till 19:00. About 14,776 voters have ages between 18 and 25 years, more than 56,000 electors are aged between 26 and 40 years, about 55,000 – between 41 and 55 years, 71,000 – between 56 and 70 years and about 23,000 voters are older than 71.

As much as 36.14 per cent of all electors who came to vote are from the Botanica district of Chisinau, 35.85 per cent are from the Buiucani district, almost 37.34 per cent are from the Centru district, 35 per cent of the voters are from the Ciocana district, 37.6 per cent are from the Rascani district and about 31 per cent are from the suburbs.

Till 19:00, the highest voter turnout was recorded in the districts Botanica and Centru of the capital and the lowest one – in the suburbs.

The suburb with the highest voter turnout is the village of Tohatin, where more than 37 per cent of the electors voted and the lowest voter turnout was registered in Sangera, about 24.96 per cent.

The polling stations were opened at 7:00 and will be closed at 21:00.

According to information provided by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), more than 631,000 voters are included in the basic lists, of whom less of all are registered in the Centru district of Chisinau and most of all in the Botanica district of the capital.

The general mayor elected will exercise his powers till the general local elections due in June 2019. Following the new local polls from 20 May 2018, two candidates remained to compete for the runoff: the candidate on behalf of the Political Party, Party of Socialists of Moldova, Ion Ceban, who picked up 40.97 per cent of the votes, and the candidate on the behalf of the Dignity and Truth Platform Political Party, Andrei Nastase, who got 32.12 per cent of the votes. The candidate due to get the largest number of suffrages will be declared winner of the runoff.
