Chisinau, 09 June /MOLDPRES/ – The Medico-Social Philanthropic Foundation "Angelus Moldova", financially supported by EU, will deal with creation and maintenance of palliative care services on the left bank of the Dniester river.

The palliative care has become part of healthcare system in Moldova since 2008. However, on left bank of the Dniester, palliative care is a novelty for both medical staff and patients.

According to statistics, in Transnistrian region at end of 2016, over ten thousand persons, 2.1 per cent of region population, were at Tisspol oncological dispensary. The proportion of persons which died during first year of diagnosis was 27.6 per cent, and all of these patients would have needed palliative care.

"Following talks with experts of Tiraspol, we agreed on urgent need to take measures on it, to benefit of diagnosed persons and their families," said national expert in palliative care, Valerian Isac.

The project provides training for palliative care specialists, translating national clinical protocols, Palliative Care Guidelines and relevant specialist info. This week, 13 specialists from the left bank of the Dniester visited homes of patients together with Hospice Angelus staff and watched how pediatric palliative care services were provided at Pediatric Palliative Care Centre "Casa Angelus" in Isacova village, Orhei district.

"We are thinking about creating premises for introduction of a functional palliative care system on left bank of the Dniester river following this project implementation. By addressing topic of palliative care and incurable illness that can affect everyone, we demonstrate that we are confronted with general human challenges," said executive director of Angelus Moldova Foundation, Cristina Grossu – Chiriac.

This is one of 30 partnerships funded by EU through programme "Support to Confidence Building Measures", implemented by UNDP, which aims at enhancing cooperation of two banks of the Dniester river.
