Moldovan cabinet approves enhanced measures to combat, prevent spread of ambrosia

Chisinau, 3 October /MOLDPRES/ - Ambrosia will be destroyed all over Moldova and authorities will undertake measures to diminish risks to people’s health triggered by this plant. In this respect, the cabinet today approved a regulation on the fighting and preventing the spread of ambrosia, as well as an action plan for its implementation. The measures were taken at an initiative by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who demanded introduction of ambrosia on the list of banned plants, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.     

Under the regulation, till 30 May each year, the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection, National Food Safety Agency and the National Agency for Public Health will be in charge of identifying the grounds infected with ambrosia and monitoring their cleaning. 

At the same time, on the period between the plant’s springing and the end of the vegetation period, employees competent with the grounds’ management will be obliged to destroy the plant by mowing, uprooting or treatment with phyto-sanitary products. If the provisions of the regulation are not observed, the competent persons will be sanctioned with a fine up to 1,500 lei, and if these people could not be identified, public authorities will have obligation to maintain the ground.   

Also, the document stimulates residents’ informing about the negative effects of ambrosia, through the webpage of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry, as well as by organizing awareness campaigns.
