Over 90 crimes using weapons committed in first nine months of 2018

Chisinau, 2 November /MOLDPRES/- Over 90 crimes using weapons were committed in January - September this year. The data are set in a report by the Inspectorate General Police Inspectorate (IGP), presented in the context of raising public awareness campaign entitled "Now it is time to hand over weapons!"

According to the report, in most cases, illegal weapons were used - 54 offenses, and in 37 cases – registered weapons were applied.

Thus, there was an increase in the number of crimes with the use of illegal weapons in the districts: Botanica, Râşcani, Ciocana and Buiucani in the capital and in the localities: Sângerei, Criuleni, Cahul, Hincesti, Nisporeni, Ungheni and Balti.

IGP press officer Mariana Beţivu said that the main reasons for the offense were: excessive drinking and revenge intentions.

Owners of weapons were to report them to police inspectorate by 25 October. The action is made every five years to verify that people meet all legal conditions for holding weapons.

According to statistics, in Moldova there are over 58,000 people holding about 71,000 weapons. Annually, police identified about 500 illegal weapons.

People holding weapons illegally are at risk of serving unpaid work or up to three years in prison.
