Chisinau, 07 November /MOLDPRES/ – A street in municipality Buzau (Romania) will be named Soroca. This is what the mayor of Buzau, Constantin Toma, recently said, who mentioned that the relations of collaboration and twinning between the two territorial-administrative units have been getting tighter, with reference to the local press.

"The decision was taken at the Buzau Local Council meeting. This street, which will be called Soroca, will be in bulevardul Unirii. I hope the Soroca citizens will make a gesture because we financed the restoration of the cliff in front of the Soroca fortress. We do our duty there, for such a city, with such significance, had to have an alley, a distinctive cliff face," said the mayor of Buzau, Constantin Toma.

The mayor of Soroca, Victor Sau, said that public hearings are to be held to name a part of street Petru Rares in front of the fortress, repaired with the support of the Buzau authorities – Buzau Faleza. Subsequently, the subject is to be submitted for examination at the meeting of the Soroca Municipal Council. "It would be a nice gesture from the Soroca citizens, in gratitude and thankfulness for the support given to the rehabilitation of the cliff near the Soroca Fortress," said Victor Sau, quoted by ziarulnostru.info.

The city hall of Buzau has allocated €100,000 for reconstruction of the Dniester river bank and revitalisation of the Soroca Fortress landscape. The project is being carried out by the Soroca city hall in partnership with the Buzau authorities. The reconstruction of the Dniester bank is estimated at around €138,500. The bulk of the financial sources being provided by the Buzau local council, and a quarter of the sum will be allocated by the Soroca municipal council.

The support of Romanian colleagues is part of the Twinning Agreement, signed by the Mayors of Buzau and Soroca, in December 2017. The document provides for social, economic cooperation, exchanges of experience between employees of two administrations, mutual visits between pupils and teachers, as well as the joint organisation of several meetings and celebrations.

The Soroca Fortress is a Moldavian fortress of the 16th century, built of wood by Stefan cel Mare, in front of the river Dniester, and rebuilt in stone under Petru Rares in the middle of the 16th century. The fortress is an emblematic one for Moldova and it is a cornerstone for revitalising of regional tourism.
