More than 3,000 persons preliminarily register for parliamentary polls in Moldova

Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ - More than 3,000 persons have preliminarily registered for the parliamentary elections due on 24 February 2019. The head of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Alina Russu, made statements to this effect at a news conference today.     

The preliminary registration is valid for Moldova’s citizens with right to vote, who are abroad or have residence in settlements from the left bank of Dniester and intend to participate in the ballot.

„People can fill in an online registration form at the column Preliminary Registration on the webpage www.alegator.md. The registration can be made also on paper by submitting an application signed individually or collectively to CEC or diplomatic missions, consular offices of Moldova. So far, people from abroad have submitted more than 3,000 applications and those from the Transnistrian region – only ten applications. We hope that the number of citizens due to submit applications will increase,” Russu noted.    

Voters may preliminary register till 9 January 2019, which means by 45 days before the election day. The voter can cancel the earlier made registration 25 days ahead of the polls at the latest.  

The preliminary registration does not entail the exclusion of the citizens from the electoral lists where they have their residence. In case, on the election day, the person registered is in Moldova for one or another reason, he/she will be able to vote according to the residence.

The preliminary registration allows establishing the estimative number of electors due to vote abroad and the voters from the settlements of the left bank of Dniester, in order to facilitate the opening of additional polling stations and determine the estimative number of ballot papers due to be distributed to the concerned polling stations. As many as 13,400 citizens preliminarily registered for the presidential elections from 2016.  

The parliamentary elections from 24 February 2019 will be held based on a mixed electoral system for the first time ever. As much as 110.2 million lei is needed to carry out the polls.
