Moldova to implement more actions to fight climate changes threat

Chisinau, 23 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova, along with the five countries of the Eastern Partnership, will benefit from support in efforts of adaptation to the climate changes and development of a low-emission economy. This will become possible within a regional programme, EU4Climate, launched in Chisinau today.    

The project has an overall budget of 8.8 million euros and will be implemented in the next four years and includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. It will be financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).  

The initiative will contribute to adjusting the national legislation to the EU standards in the climate sector and will back the implementation of a rigorous system of reporting the volume of greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, decision-makers will make an analysis of the expenses at several public institutions, in order to see to what extent they contribute to combating the climate changes.     

At the project’s launch, the state secretary of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry, Valentina Tapis, said that Moldova had committed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by at least 64 per cent against the level of 1990 till 2030. “The commitment might conditionally increase up to 78 per cent, if financial resources, technologies transfer are provided and in case of technical cooperation with industrially developed countries,” Tapis said.

Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko said that the European Union has earmarked about 580 million euros for actions related to environment, climate, energy efficiency and renewable energy with the Eastern Partnership countries.  

UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Dima Al-Khatib said that the launch of the project EU4Climate provided an impetus and opened new opportunities of climate actions in the region.

Moldova must mobilize more than 8.6 billion dollars till 2030, in order to fulfill the commitment of cutting the gas emissions by at least 64 per cent against 1990. In Moldova, the energy, transport, buildings, industry and agriculture are the sectors which generate the biggest emissions.
