Former PM likely to be heard by commission investigating theft of billion

Chisinau, 22 August /MOLDPRES/- Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat could be heard by the Commission of Inquiry on elucidating the circumstances of robbing the banking system. The chairman of the commission, Alexandru Slusari, made the statement today. He said that so far, 23 people have been heard, and the amounts stolen from the three banks exceed one billion US dollars.

The committee members will decide if they request or not hearing Filat. Many people have requested to be heard by the commission, among them are Sorin Stati, former director of MoldAtsa, but MPs recommended to him to send the information in writing.

Slusari said that so far, the commission has examined a large number of documents and heard 23 people, including former ministers, and the amounts stolen from the three banks exceed one billion dollars. "It is certainly more than one billion. The biggest crimes occurred after the state guarantees were granted to the three banks and the figures we have only concern the banking system in the Republic of Moldova ”, he said.

The committee members recently asked the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to submit copies of informative notes on banking system in Moldova.

Slusari pointed out he asked the law enforcement bodies to start criminal proceedings on Iurie Leanca, Dorin Dragutan, Adrian Candu and Anatol Arapu.

The state guarantees issued in the case of the three banks were subsequently transformed into the state debt.
