Value of Moldovan wine exported in 2018 exceeds MDL 2.3 bln

Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ – In wine year 2018 – 2019, Moldova has exported 14.1 million dal wine, 1.8 per cent less than in 2017 – 2018. Its value exceeded the figure of MDL 2.3 billion. Totally, there were processed 356,000 tonnes of grapes last year and produced 19 million tonnes of wine. The data were presented at IInd issue of the National Conference of wine sector.

According to the National Office of Vine and Wine's (ONVV) information and media communication service, in wine year 2018 – 2019, as a result of the record harvests, recorded in recent 02 years, the ratio between supply and demand of wine has reached practically the indicators of 2013, those after establishing the embargo. Thus, the average for recent 07 years shows that Moldova has produced 04 times more wine than the export markets could absorb, given that 85 per cent of Moldovan wine is sold abroad.

At the global level, 2018 was also marked by a record harvest (+17 per cent or 43 million hectolitres), the growth being comparable to 23 annual grape crops in Moldova. At the opposite end, in recent 10 years the world consumption of wine, including in Moldova, has registered a slight decrease, reaching 244 million hectoliters.

Of the total wine exported by Moldova in wine year 2018 – 2019, there were delivered 9.8 million dal in bulk, and the remaining 4.24 million dal were bottled wine, which is over 56 million bottles. Poland, Romania, Czechia, China and Russia remain the main bottled wine markets of Moldova. Also, Belarus, Georgia and Russia imported 77 per cent of the total volume of bulk wine produced in Moldova.

This year, the producers estimate to harvest about 700,000 tonnes of grapes from 130,000 ha of vineyards.
