Chisinau, 30 October /MOLDPRES/ - There is a risk of waters’ contamination with pesticides in Moldova. For this reason, the authorities should ask for NATO’s support to evacuate and destroy those more than 280 tons of pesticides placed in 23 warehouses. The head of the parliament’s commission for security and public order, Chiril Motpan, made statements to this effect at a news conference today.

According to Motpan, NATO has already implemented a project on the evacuation and destruction of pesticides in Moldova; yet, the quantity which still remains deposited poses a major risk for the environment, as well as for the population’s health.

„There are still 23 warehouses with pesticides in Moldova, which are in a disastrous state and they might contaminate the soil and underground waters in the immediate neighbourhood. Another problem is the quicksilver waste, found at citizens or confiscated during criminal investigations, as well as a string of luminescent lamps which pose danger too,” Motpan said.

The MP noted that only 19 out of those 23 warehouses were guarded by law-enforcers, who restrict access; the rest are placed on private areas.

The lawmaker specified that the competent authorities presently cannot detect the sources of radiological contamination, as they do not have the needed equipment. The old equipments, managed by the Agency for Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities till the year before, were deteriorated in the wake of a fire.
