Chisinau, 4 November /MOLDPRES/- The director of the Center for Demographic Research of the National Institute of Economic Research of the Republic of Moldova, Olga Gagauz, said in an interview with MOLDPRES that in the last five years the Moldovan state has lost 190 thousand citizens.
"On July 11, 2019, the National Bureau of Statistics announced the number of persons residing in the Republic of Moldova - 2,681,000 persons, down by 190 thousand than in 2014", she said.
The natural decrease of the population of Moldova was recorded for the first time in 1999, then the birth rate was considerably lower than that of deaths. Despite warnings from the academic environment, the population decline continued in the following years. "According to the forecast by the Center for Demographic Research in 2014, the decrease in population will continue slowly but surely. In 2035 the number of population residing in the Republic of Moldova will be 2 million 100 thousand. This forecast was confirmed by the data in 2019 by the National Statistics Bureau,” she said.
The reasons for the decrease of the population in the Republic of Moldova are due to the high morbidity rate, the low fertility indicator and the low life expectancy. The large number of economic migrants who establish their residence outside the Moldovan state also contributes to the depopulation of our country.
