Moldovan PM calls on all country's forces to cooperate in justice reform process

Chisinau, 21 January /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu has made a public  appeal “for active participation in the process of consultation and giving final touches to the draft justice reform.” The PM invited the parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political parties, civil society’s representatives and the justice sector professionals, all interested people to participate in this process and provide needed support for the reformation of justice in Moldova.     

In the context, Ion Chicu noted that the Justice Ministry would organize, starting from this week, comprehensive consultations on the draft of the strategy of the justice reform and the action plan on its enforcement. “We want an efficient cooperation, so that, in the end, we have a draft on reformation of justice accepted by all those who want Moldova to become a prosperous state,” the prime minister stressed.  

The justice reform is an opportunity on the prime minister’s agenda, being also “an absolute necessity for our country, as well as the biggest challenge faced by the current government.” “Personally, I see no chance to change the things for the better in Moldova, if we fail to put an end to the disorder in justice, prosecutor’s office, economic police, as well as other structures of the state,” Ion Chicu said.  

PM Ion Chicu on 20 January had a meeting with the members of the ad-hoc working group on the justice reform, led by Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe (CoE) Christos Giakoumopoulos.  The working group was set up by CoE, in order to provide support to Moldova in the implementation of the judicial reform.  

“I discussed with the group of experts, who considered the draft justice reform strategy and the action plan for its enforcement, which we submitted to the Council of Europe on 3 January this year. The main conclusion following the discussions (which will permanently continue) is that the adoption and promotion of a fundamental reform, such as the justice one, needs a wide involvement of the entire society, not only of the government and parliament. The draft on the reformation of justice must be subjected to a comprehensive consultation with the civil society, professionals from the system, as well as the political forces of Moldova, both at rule and from the opposition,” Ion Chicu added.
