Chisinau, 31 January /MOLDPRES/ - A campaign titled, Donate a book for penitentiary, has been launched by the National Library of Moldova (BNRM). The campaign is organized on the period, 1 February – 1 March, during the Reading Year, at an initiative by the administration of penitentiaries.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, BNRM director Elena Pintilei said that, during the last years, the National Library had received requests on behalf of the administrations of penitentiaries from Chisinau, Leova, Rusca, Cricova, etc., in order to get the institution involved to solve a major problem – completing the libraries with books.

”Taking into account the fact that the National Library declared the 2020 librarianship year as Reading Year and taking into consideration the aforementioned requests, we ruled to start a campaign of collecting boos for the readers who are presently detained. At the same time, we studied the content of these requests and reached conclusion that especially young people who are imprisoned now ask for literature for self-training and self-development. This literature will allow them easier integrate in the society when at large. They ask for publications in the following fields: motivational psychology, law, history, belles-letters, etc. in the Romanian, as well as in Russian languages,” the BNRM director said.

According to Elena Pintilei, this campaign will help ensure a fair access to information and the education of detained people. “Certainly, each of us have books we no longer read, but which will be of real use for somebody. Let us contribute to the formation and urging of imprisoned people. For donations, we expect you at BNRM, the central building (31 August 1989 Street, No 78 A),” Elena Pintilei added.

In 2019, the National Library gave 135 books to the Leova penitentiary and 121 – to the Cricova one. Another book collection was prepared for the Rusca penitentiary.
