Chisinau, 16 April /MOLDPRES/ - The first meeting of the first democratically elected parliament of Moldova took place on 17 April 1990, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.

The 1990 Parliament was the result of the first attempt of electoral competition in conditions of political pluralism. Following the ballot, 371 MPs were elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic (RSSM) of the then 12th legislative period. Most of the lawmakers, in the electoral campaign, were backed by the People’s Front of Moldova, Unity-Edinstvo Movement, as well as the Moldovan Communist Party.

On 23 May 1991, in line with the Decision by RSSM’s Supreme Soviet of the 12th legislative period, the former republic of the Soviet Union was renamed into Republic of Moldova and the Supreme Soviet was renamed first parliament of Moldova. The first parliament had three speakers: Mircea Snegur, Alexandru Mosanu and Petru Lucinschi.

Named Independence Parliament, the legislative body of 1990 adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty on 23 June 1990 and the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova on 27 August 1991, the laws on the State Flag, Coat of Arms and National Anthem of Moldova, as well as a new electoral law, under which the country switched from the majority electoral system to the proportional one and the number of MPs decreased to 104 people.
