Well-known Moldovan ethnologist, folklorist passes away

Chisinau, 21 February /MOLDPRES/ - Ethnologist and folklorist, master in art, PhD in ethnology Tudor Colac has died at the age of 72 years.

Colac passed away of heart attack, being infected with COVID, at the Chisinau-based Republican Hospital.

Tudor Colac was born in the Dumeni village, Costiceni commune, Hotin county (presently, Noua Sulita district, Chernivtsi region, Ukraine). In 1970, he graduated from the Philology Faculty, journalism section, of the Moldovan State University (USM). Simultaneously, Colac made evening musical studies at the Fine Arts Faculty, musical instruments section, at the same higher education institution.   

In 1970-1977, Tudor Colac was lecturer at the Press Theory and Practice Department of the USM Journalism Faculty. Concomitantly, he attended post-graduate courses at the Romanian Literature department of the USM Faculty of Letters. Afterwards, he acted as competent secretary and editor of the folklore programmes at Radio Moldova.    

In 1980, Tudor Colac became head of section at the Republican Scientific and Methodical Centre of People’s Creation and Cultural Activity of the Ministry of Culture and Cults and then head of the folklore and ethnography section at the same institution. In 1990, Colac was appointed director of this Centre and by plurality of offices – head of the general directorate of work in the territory at the Ministry of Culture and Cults. In 1994-1998, Tudor Colac trained for the degree of doctor in ethnology at the Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Colac maintained there the thesis of PhD in ethnology, folklore specialty.     

He is author of more books on folklore and ethnology subjects. Colac participated in the organization of important folklore festivals in Moldova, Romania, Ukraine and Hungary. He was member of the Moldovan Writers’ Union, Musicians’ Union and the Union of Theatre People from Moldova.

Tudor Colac will be buried at the Central Cemetery from the Armeneasca Street in Chisinau.
