Astronomical summer starts with solstice on 21 June

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ - The summer solstice, which occurred today at 06:32, marked the beginning of the astronomical summer. The longest day and the shortest night of the year are registered on this date.
The solstice represents the two moments of the year when the Sun is positioned at the lowest and, respectively, the highest height against the Equator. After the moment of the summer solstice, the duration of the daylight starts decreasing and the one of the night begins increasing during six months till 21 December, when the moment of the winter solstice is marked.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the phenomenon takes place in inverted sense.
The summer solstice (respectively, the winter one) is not occurring each year on the same day and at the same hour. In the leap years, the summer solstice can happen to take place on 20 June. This year, the summer solstice coincides with the second day after the feast of Descent of the Holy Spirit.
