Anniversary of 110 years of birthday of famous Romanian folk music singer marked today

Chisinau, 7 November /MOLDPRES/ - The 110th anniversary of the birthday of the departed Romanian peasant’s and folk music singer from the Gorj county, Maria Lataretu, is marked today. Lataretu was one of the most beloved singers in the field, named often the Nightingale of Gorj.   

Jazzman Johnny Raducanu described Maria Lataretu as an Ella Fitzgerald of  Romania.  

Since her childhood, Maria Lataretu sang at round dances, weddings, boyar’s parties, etc.   

Lataretu came to Bucharest for the first time in 1933. Her first recordings were made on 19 July 1937. On 13 September 1937, she recorded at the Columbia disks house under the artistic supervision of the Folklore Archive of the Society of Romanian Composers.   

Lataretu sang for the first time at Radio Bucharest on 29 August 1937. She sang with the folk music band of her husband till 1949, when she became first soloist of the Barbu Lautaru orchestra of the Folklore Institute. The singer retired from here in 1966.

Maria Lataretu made numerous tours both in Romania and abroad: to Poland, Czechoslovakia, USSR, Egypt, Syria, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Jordan. During her career, she sang with great heads of orchestra and conductors.  

Maria Lataretu died in the Romanesti commune, Botosani county of Romania, on 27 September 1972.
