Chisinau, 8 November /MOLDPRES/ - The annual campaign of creating green areas titled, PLANT YOUR FUTURE, will start in Moldova on 13 November. A call on strengthening the efforts and mobilizing the entire country will be launched within the event. As many as 5.5million trees will be planted in the next weeks, in order to support the natural regeneration of almost 580 hectares and complete several thousands of hectares of recent plantations.

According to the Environment Ministry, the campaign will last one month and will involve hundreds of mayoralties and institutions from all Moldova’s regions, tens of non-governmental organizations and social groups.

„Presently, the rate of Moldova’s afforestation is a bit more than 11 per cent of the area. Studies show that forests must cover at least 25 per cent of the country’s area, for a balanced environment, with a better quality of the air and soil, a sufficient quantity of water and a sound biodiversity. The ecological reconstruction and the extension of the national forest fund are necessary,’’ the Environment Ministry said.

In the context of the concerns dealing with the global warming and the last commitments taken by Moldova internationally, the forests are to be reestablished and extended on an area of at least 100,000 hectares till 2030. The conservation and planting of forests massifs are among the priorities of the Environment Ministry and is a goal of the government’s action programme.

The lack of vegetation is a significant factor in the appearance of problems of any kind, such as: erosion, degradation of soil, annual loss of fertile soil, drought, rivers’ miring, climate changes, etc. ‘’To interrupt the chain of these problems, including the illegal cuttings, abusive exploitation, corruption, indifference, which trigger annual damages caused to the country’s economy, it is necessary to enhance the degree of citizens’ awareness, as the forest has a major role in the health of the environment, of the animals and people’s health,’’ the competent ministry said.

The Environment Ministry urges people interested in participating in the creation of green areas in Moldova and inform that they can learn when and where planting of trees are organized in their settlement, by accessing the webpage of the Environment Ministry - www.mediu.gov.md, where an online information centre dedicated to this campaign will be. ‘’On 13 November, we go out to greening with families and colleagues, in order to plant our future!’’ reads a press release by the Environment Ministry.
