Exhibition dedicated to poet Grigore Vieru opened at National Library

Chisinau, 15 Feb. / MOLDPRES /- An exhibition of documents and publications dedicated to poet Grigore Vieru with the title "Longing for pure verse like a tear" was opened yesterday at the National Library.

Elena Pintilei, director of the institution, mentioned that the exhibition presents about 90 documents: volumes of poems, children's books, the author's work translated into other languages, music CDs on the lyrics of Grigore Vieru, reproductions and philately.

The exhibition will be open until February 28.

Grigore Vieru was born on February 14, 1935 in the village of Pererata, Hotin County, now Briceni District. His work has been translated into English, Russian, German, Italian, Bulgarian and other languages. In 1988 he was awarded the most prestigious international distinction in the field of children's literature - the Honorary Diploma H. Ch. Andersen.

In 1996 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. In 1990 he was elected an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, and in 1993 - a corresponding member of it. He passed away on January 18, 2009 following a car accident. Grigore Vieru was post-mortem decorated with the National Order Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Cross. Currently, several schools in the Republic of Moldova, a boulevard in the capital and a street in Iasi, Romania, bear his name.
