Chisinau, 3 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today signed the application on Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The document was countersigned by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.
“The maturity of a nation is best of all seen in difficult times. It is read is the calm of the people, when a real danger knocks at the door. We have proved that we are a mature people and we showed that we want to live according to European rules, when we defended the democracy at the elections. We are mature now and provide assistance to the neighbours; we preserve our neutrality, but remain calm and generous. The maturing took us 30 years, now with the learned lessons, we are ready to assume the responsibility of the future. We want to live as part of the free world,’’ Maia Sandu said.
She noted that the application signed today was addressed to the leadership of France, which presently holds the EU Presidency. ‘’Moldova must have a clear European path and we are prepared to do everything for the achievement of this national and fundamental goal. We will cover all stages, in order to edify the prosperous future of our people. Sharing our European aspirations, the European Union will show to the entire world how great the power of democracy and freedom is. We know exactly what we have to do. We will be stronger together,’’ Maia Sandu said.
A similar application on accession was submitted by Georgia today. The two countries will join Ukraine in efforts of accession, after President Volodimir Zelenski on 1 March asked EU to quickly approve Kiev’s joining EU, in the context of the Russian invasion in his country.
Presently, countries which officially have the status of candidates for accession are Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Turkey. Nevertheless, the negotiations on accession are blocked or have been lingering for more years.
The status of candidate for accession to EU can provide a country with concrete benefits, for instance, due to the fact that it becomes more attractive for investments, the commercial flows are easier and the stability is better.
