First probable case of severe hepatitis in children recorded in Moldova

Chisinau, May 12 / MOLDPRES /- The Ministry of Health announced today about the registration in the Republic of Moldova of a probable case of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children.

The child was hospitalized on May 7 in the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases of Children in Chisinau with symptoms specific to acute viral hepatitis.

During the hospitalization, complex investigations were performed, but all evidence of known liver viruses is negative and other causes of liver damage have also been ruled out. Thus, the case is considered of unknown etiology. Currently, the child is still hospitalized, being in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations, as recommended by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization (WHO), are ongoing to determine the cause of the symptoms.

According to WHO data, as of May 10, 348 probable cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology had been reported in 21 countries.
