Chisinau, 1 November /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today addressed the citizens from both banks of the Prut river at the rostrum of Romania’s parliament, the presidential press service has reported.

„This is an extra proof that we enjoy strong mutual confidence and that, despite the extremely difficult times for everybody, Moldova and Romania build their fate together, as part of the free world. Moldova – on way to the European Union. Romania – stronger in the European Union,’’ the Moldovan president said.

At a today’s visit to Bucharest, Maia Sandu gave a speech at an international conference titled, The women lawmakers from Romania and the promotion of gender equality as national commitment. The event was organized by the Senate of Romania, under the High Patronage of the Romanian Presidency.

As for the subject on women’s representation in politics, the head of state said that Moldova’s society backed women’s involvement in the political life, as we are Europeans and we have European values. Thus, 40 per cent of the Moldovan parliament is made up of women and about 200 women lead mayoralties. ‘’Although initially some people opposed quotas of representation, the time proved their importance for ensuring equal opportunities. Yet, besides laws, for the boosting of women’s voice in politics, the parties should also appreciate and promote people according to merits, developing an inclusive organizational culture,’’ President Maia Sandu stressed.

In her speech, the head of state also thanked Romania for being with Moldova whenever needed, including now, when it supplies us with electric energy in the most serious energy crisis, triggered by the war at the country’s borders. ‘’A war in which Russian missiles already fall on our land and which the group of thieves from Moldova, along with the pro-Russian parties, would like to use for overthrowing the constitutional order and our European integration. We cannot allow this and I will do my utmost for Moldova to be on the good side of the history and our people to live in peace, free and dignified, at home,’’ the Moldovan president noted.

The head of state also said that a democratic state at the border with Romania is for the benefit of everybody, including of the European Union. Thus, Maia Sandu voiced hope for the constant support of Romania, to help Moldova survive as part of the free world and for the citizens from both banks of Prut to live in peace and well-being, in a common European home.
