Chisinau, Dec. 6 /MOLDPRES/- A cycle of lessons about the benefits of the soil and the need to protect it was organized in 32 schools in Orhei and Rezina. The meetings with the students were initiated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on World Soil Day, marked annually on 5 December.

The lessons were organized within an FAO project that aims to achieve the neutrality of soil degradation in the Republic of Moldova, implemented with the support of the Global Environment Facility. According to the deputy representative of FAO in Moldova, Tudor Robu, demonstration lots are being created in the pilot regions of Rezina and Orhei where sustainable, environmentally friendly technologies and practices are implemented to maintain the ecosystem.

"Soil degradation in Moldova is a problem that worries us every year. The fertile surface of the soil is gradually deteriorating and we are unfortunately still far from using friendly techniques for sustainable agricultural production in such a way as to diminish this constant process of degradation. For this reason, the project comes to urge the farmers of the Republic of Moldova to use the agricultural land in a thoughtful way so that we can perpetuate a good fruit for many years", explained Tudor Robu.

World Soil Day is marked every year on December 5, since 2013. It is a day when all of humanity is urged to be aware of the crucial role of soil in ensuring food security, but also the fact that soil erosion across the planet is an international concern. Soils provide about 95 percent of the food for a population of 8 billion people, a figure reached this fall, with a growing trend of up to 9 billion in 2050.
