Chisinau, Feb. 1 /MOLDPRES/- The Russian concern Gazprom is an unpredictable cooperation partner, therefore it is necessary to have alternatives. Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Janis Mazeiks made the statement in an interview given exclusively with MOLDPRES State News Agency.

According to the official, it is very good that the Republic of Moldova is diversifying its sources of gas procurement and storage. "That's one of the key things you need because one of the problems in 2021 was that you didn't have backups or alternatives. Now you have reserves, part of them are stored in Ukraine, another part in Romania. If we refer to the security of gas storage in Ukraine, experts told us that this source is a safe one due to the organization of storage capacities", said Janis Mazeiks.

The official highlighted the progress the country has made in the energy sector. "Given cutting of gas supplies from Gazprom that was not predictable, or the limitation of 30% of electricity imports, as Russia was bombing the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Moldova managed to provide citizens with gas and electricity. As regards Gazprom, unfortunately, we have seen that this concern is not credible, as it has reduced gas supplies, which would not be in accordance with the concluded contract. So, it should be taken into account that Gazprom is an unpredictable cooperation partner, and therefore it is necessary to have alternatives", Janis Mazeiks said.

The ambassador said that European experts will continue to provide the Republic of Moldova with the necessary expertise on gas procurement sources.
