Well-known Moldovan composer, conductor would have turned 81 years

Chisinau, 14 March /MOLDPRES/ - A well-known composer, conductor, instrumentalist, former head of the Noroc (Luck) band and of the vocal and instrumental ensemble Contemporanul (The Contemporary), People’s Artist, holder of the Order of the Republic Mihai Dolgan would have turned 81 years today.     

Mihai Dolgan was born in the Vladimiresti village, central Sangerei district, in 1942. In 1959-1962, he studied at the Stefan Neaga Music College from Chisinau. Dolgan started his musical career in 1958.   

In 1967, Mihai Dolgan founded the Noroc vocal and instrumental ensemble. In 1970, the Noroc band participated in the Bratislavska Lyra  International Festival, where it got the prize, Liking of the Audience, for the song titled, Why, Why. After this event, the band went on a tour to Ukraine and should have made a tour to South Africa, but was liquidated without right to work in the Moldovan Soviet Republic (RSSM). In 1970-71, Mihai Dolgan was soloist and instrumentalist at the Philharmonic from Tambov and then in Cherkassy and other cities of the former USSR.       

In 1974, the party bodies of the RSSM allowed the band’s reorganization at the philharmonic with the name, The Contemporary; with this name, the band worked till 1985, when it returned to the initial name of Noroc.   

In 1977, Mihai Dolgan was awarded the title Merited Artist and in 1988 – the one of People’s Artist. In 2001, Dolgan was awarded the Order of the Republic.

Mihai Dolgan passed away in Chisinau on 16 March 2008. He was buried at the Central Cemetery on the Armeneasca Street from Chisinau. In 2018, a square was inaugurated in the memory of composer, light music singer Mihai Dolgan at the intersection of the Stefan cel Mare Boulevard and the Bulgara Street from the Moldovan capital.
