Chisinau, 6 June /MOLDPRES/ - Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has had a meeting with NATO deputy secretary general Mircea Geoana, as well as with a string of ambassadors accredited under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, during his working visit to Brussels, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.

The officials tackled the issue of security in the region, in the context of Russia’s unjustified war waged against Ukraine.

„I availed myself of this occasion to reiterate Moldova’s firm support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the need to consolidate the security in Europe.  Moldova firmly condemns the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which endangers the life of thousands of civilians from the region. Our country is ready to provide every needed support to those who suffered in the wake of this barbarian attack,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu said.

Moldova and NATO are on a period of boosting and diversifying the cooperation, in order to advance the process of reformation and modernization of the national security and defence sector.

„In this respect, I reiterated the fact that Moldova does not want to be in isolation; we want our country to become a true factor of stability in the region. The investments in the security and defence sectors will allow us achieving this goal.

For us, it is important to strengthen the partnership with the organizations and countries which support the freedom, human rights and democracy and the NATO is an area which has been ensuring the peace, stability and democracy for more than 70 years.

I expressed Moldova’s determination to contribute to the regional and world peace and security, including through participation in peacekeeping missions or humanitarian assistance missions. An extended and deepened partnership with the NATO, correlated and synchronized with the way of accession to the European Union, will serve this goal best of all,’’ the Moldovan official said.
