Moldovan foreign affairs minister has bilateral meetings with more Portuguese officials in Lisbon

Chisinau, 13 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan diplomacy head, Nicu Popescu, has paid a working visit to Lisbon, Portugal, where he discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries. The Moldovan foreign affairs minister punctually informed about Moldova’s progress made in the process of integration in the great European family, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.   

At a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister of Portugal João Gomes Cravinho, the officials touched upon ways Moldova can be backed in continuation, both on the way of reforms and on the one of accession to the European Union. Minister Nicu Popescu also expressed Moldova’s   wish to strengthen the political, economic, commercial and cultural relations. The asides also signed two agreements, one economic agreement and another one in the education sector, from which the citizens of both countries will benefit. The officials emphasized the important role of the community of Moldovans settled in Portugal in the rapprochement between the two countries, a community which preserves strong relations with Moldova.      

The process of Moldova’s accession to the European Union and the country’s progress as to the implementation of those nine recommendations of the European Commission were the main subjects discussed at a meeting with the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal Tiago Antunes. In the context, Nicu Popescu said that Moldova relied on the support of Portugal in the starting of the negotiations on accession to EU till the end of this year.    

„I had a meeting also with Deputy Parliament Speaker of Portugal Adão Silva, with whom I discussed our European integration way, consolidation of the economic relations and ways of boosting the cooperation between the Moldovan and Portuguese parliaments.    

At the same time, I gave an interview with the Diario de Noticias publication, within which I spoke about the process of Moldova’s accession to EU, as well as the reforms we are implementing. I highlighted the fact that the European Union represents a fundamental project for the promotion of peace and democracy and that Moldova decisively advances in the efforts to strengthen its anchoring in the European family,’’ the Moldovan official said.
