First day at United Nations General Assembly: Moldovan president discusses sustainable development, bilateral cooperation

Chisinau, 190 September /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu, on the first day of the United Nations General Assembly, has emphasized the progress made by Moldova in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), as the country went up from the 48th position in 2021 to the 25th one in 2023 in the UN Ranking , the presidential press service reported.       

Despite the recent challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, Moldova consolidated the commitment to SDG. The Moldovan president highlighted the measures adopted in the energy sector, including the diversification of the sources of supply with energy and development of a legislative framework for the production of energy from renewable resources.    

At the same time, the Centre for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) awarded to President Maia Sandu the Freedom Fighter 2023 Prize, thus recognizing the Moldovan citizens’ commitment for democracy and the values of the free world. In her speech, the president stressed the country’s determination to cope with the challenges, among which also the impact of the war in Ukraine and the hybrid threats against Moldova.    

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Maia Sandu had bilateral discussions with European leaders, such as President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset, President of Slovakia Zuzana Čaputová and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson. The discussions were focused on Moldova’s accession to the European Union, the carrying out of the reforms and the strengthening of the bilateral relations. Also, Maia Sandu discussed with United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, underlining the appreciation for the constant American support.
