Moldovan government to ask parliament to extend state of emergency for another 60 days

Chisinau, 20 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- The state of emergency in our country could be extended for a period of 60 days starting on October 2, 2023. A decision to this effect was approved at today's cabinet meeting, following the proposal of the Commission for Emergency Situations, chaired by Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The document is to be presented to the Legislature for adoption.

According to the government's communication and protocol department, the need to extend the state of emergency was determined by the persistent risks to the security of our country, as a result of the brutal war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and for the continued provision of infrastructure, energy and gas services.

The commission members noted that, ahead of the cold season, there is a risk that the Russian armed forces will intensify attacks with cruise missiles and drones on the energy infrastructure of the neighboring country, which could lead to the disruption of the electricity supply in the Republic Moldova, as happened last year.

Dependence on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine represents a major vulnerability with an impact on the stability and energy balance of the Republic of Moldova, as well as with potential economic and social impact. In this context, extending the state of emergency would allow the Government to take measures to ensure, maintain and strengthen the energy security of the Republic of Moldova.

Potential risks in the cyber and information security, communication and transport infrastructure, which could negatively affect the national economy and population mobility were also taken into account.

Also today, the commission members allocated 3.3 million lei, from the Government's Intervention Fund, to remove the consequences of the damage caused by heavy rains of July 25, 2023. 2.4 million lei will be distributed to Sărata Galbenă town hall, Hâncești district, for the capital repair of the roof of the local kindergarten. Another 197 thousand lei were allocated to the Town Hall of Temeleuți village, Florești district, for the reconstruction of the damaged roof of the gymnasium gallery, and 660 thousand lei will be distributed to the Town Hall of Ciripcău village, Florești district, for the reconstruction of the damaged roof of the gymnasium canteen.
