Moldovan president says accession to EU only way to consolidate democratic progress

Chisinau, 19 October /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s vision regarding the national security puts in the forefront the accession to the European Union, in order to ensure the safety and progress of the country. Moldova’s accession to EU is the only way of consolidating its democratic progress, protecting from the hostile actions of Russia and from corruption – the two big threats to the national security. President Maia Sandu has made statements to this effect at a news conference held jointly with Swiss President Alain Berset during her visit to Switzerland.

Maia Sandu thanked Switzerland for the support provided to Moldova. ‘’It is a great honour for me to be here, on official visit to Switzerland. This is an extra proof of the solidity of our bilateral relations. Both Moldova and the Swiss Confederation are countries which promote the peace, justice, international order and the multilateralism,’’ the Moldovan head of state said.

He official added that the partnership between Moldova and Switzerland was extended in crucial sectors, such as security. ‘’The recent inauguration of the Chisinau-based office of the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance highlights the common understanding of the fact that Moldova’s security is interconnected with the one of Europe. Together, we promote a safer, more stable and more prosperous continent,’’ President Sandu stressed.

The head of state also said that, during her meeting with President Berset, she had suggested the re-launch, in 2024, of the work of the intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation, in order to stimulate the commerce and investments between the two countries.

„I am happy that we have formalized our commitment to the cooperation in the social security sector. The joint declaration which I signed with Mr. President on 18 October in the upcoming months opens the way towards a comprehensive agreement, ensuring the observance of the rights of the Moldovan and Swiss workers,’’ Maia Sandu noted.
