One case of measles registered in Moldova

Chisinau, 4 December /MOLDPRES/ - The Health Ministry today evening informed about the confirmation of one case of measles in Moldova in a three-year-old child from the Soroca city, who has recently returned from Russia. Decision-makers found out that both the child and the people whom he came in touch with had not been vaccinated against measles.
According to the ministry, the minor’s parents asked for medical assistance following the appearance of the symptoms of this disease. The child benefited from proper treatment.
Measles is an extremely contagious disease, which is transmitted by air from the sick person. The disease is characterized by high fever, inflamed eyes, fear of light, tearing, nasal eliminations, dry cough. At the same time, on the third or fourth day, the disease is associated with red spots on skin, which initially appear on the face and neck and then they extend all over the body.
Unvaccinated children run the risk of having complications, among which the most frequent are the laryngitis, pneumonia and meningitis.
The rate of vaccination in children who turned one year is of 84.2 per cent in Moldova, while the World Health Organization recommends that the vaccination coverage should be not less than 95 per cent.
The Health Ministry notes that this is the second case of measles registered since early 2023. During the 2021 and 2022 years, no cases were reported. Moldova holds certificates of elimination of both measles and rubella from its territory.
