Edinet municipality of Moldova to benefit from more modernized public services with EU's assistance

Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - More modernized, digitalized public services and based on environment-friendly technologies were inaugurated in the northern Edinet municipality today. They include a system of sustainable public transport, smart street illumination, investments in the education system of the settlement, etc. These results were recorded within the project, Edinet – insights into tomorrow cities, financed by the European Union and implemented by the Edinet City Hall, in partnership with the City Hall of Alba Iulia, Romania.  

„The Edinet municipality has managed in the last years to attract investments from diverse programmes financed by EU and its member countries. The infrastructure in schools and kindergartens was improved, a new water and sewerage system was constructed, an industrial park was developed, which provides over 400 jobs. Today, we launch more smart public services, which contribute also to the initiation of systemic exchanges locally, including the promotion of the smart urban governance through participatory approach. I am confident that these services will improve the living of the citizens in a tangible way and this is the principal goal of the European Union,’’ Ambassador of European Union to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks said at the launch event.      

The residents and guests of the Edinet municipality will benefit from a modernized infrastructure of public transport in the city, which includes eight modern environment-friendly buses (EURO 6), with access for disabled people and a high level of comfort for passengers. At the same time, to enhance the efficiency and transparency in the exploitation of the public transport, the city hall will benefit also from a system for management of the transport, which provides for monitoring with GPS, a command point with equipment for monitoring and for the transport services, passengers will be able to opt for three ways of payment: bank card, special card developed or in cash.   

At the same time, 17 intelligent public transport stops were built within the project, endowed with information panel, cameras, photovoltaic illumination and WiFi. Three intersections of streets from the city were endowed with traffic lights, which provides for a system of green light for the public transport. Also, the street public illumination was modernized: it was endowed with video supervision cameras, of which 10 public illumination infrastructure pillars are endowed with additional functionalities, such as WiFi system and USB plugs, etc.      

The goal of the project, Edinet – insights into tomorrow cities, under implementation on the period March 2021 – February 2025, is to improve the quality of the urban development, the public services and, in general, the living conditions of the citizens from Edinet through the enforcement of smart solutions in more sectors of urban development: local governance, public services, residential districts, businesses and education. The project’s budget is of about 4.4 million euros, of which 4.1 million euros represents grant on behalf of the European Union through the programme, Local Authorities: Partnerships for sustainable cities 2020, and 218,000 euros represents the contribution of the implementation partners.
