Moldovan President's 2024 New Year message

Chisinau, 1 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Message of President Maia Sandu on the occasion of the 2024 New Year  

Dear citizens,

We finish this year with good news, with a historical decision for our country. And we start the new 2024 year with hope.

The European Union’s decision to open the negotiations on accession with Moldova means not only the hope of a better future for all Moldovans, but also a crowning of our joint efforts. A result not only of the work from the last year, but also of all generations so far, of the fight for independence and freedom, waged by our parents and grandparents.     

We finish this year conscious of the problems which we have to solve, but full of hope. It seemed many times that the fate was hostile to our country. Yet, the hope kept us united in the most difficult times. That is why, after 30 years of expectation, we feel that a new page is opened in our history. I do not say that the opening of the negotiations on accession will automatically solve all problems. After all, as a united and strong community, we can settle, one after another, the problems of our society. But what I say with full confidence is that Moldova starts the New Year with hope.   

And the hope does not mean a blind faith in miracles, but a common confidence that the power to change the things is in our hands. The hope is materialized only when there is will. And the entire Moldova shows its will through each citizen who works, in order to make his/her dream come true.  

Moldova’s participants in Olympiads who give everything they have with the hope that they will bring even more medals and will spread our fame in the world.  

The pupils who study responsibly with hope that, in several months, they will get good marks at the Baccalaureate.  

The sportspeople who bear Moldova’s flag all over the world and dedicate themselves with hope for our common victory.

The physicians who give all their ability with hope to save a life. Each life.

The teachers who dedicate themselves with hope in the education of generations of competent young people, able to edify the future at home.  

The firemen, roadmen, artists, journalists, policemen, farmers, tailors, cooks, designers, sanitation workers, civil servants, diplomats, entrepreneurs, engineers, each citizen who works to transform the hope into reality. The hope that we will edify together a strong state, where there is peace in the country, safety and cleanliness on streets and as much as possible joy in families. A state which takes care of its citizens and in the well-being of which everybody participates.   

I am grateful to each of you. We succeed together only when each one carries out the work honestly where he/she is. And I urge you to find reasons to be grateful to the people around us and appreciate each person for the valuable work he/she is doing.    

The confidence that we will succeed has kept us strong, prompted us not to give up. The most difficult thing for you to believe in success is when the difficulties torture you. Yet, characters are being created namely during in these times. A country is edified namely in such a time. And with much gratitude, I thank you for the fact that we have together managed to go through more hard crises with pride. For the confidence in ourselves and in Moldova.      

We do not choose the country where we are born. Just as we do not choose the children or family. But we love them and do everything for them. The love for children, for family, for nation exists namely despite the challenges we are going through. And this gives us strength to do everything which is up to us, so that there is good. Sometimes, we experience defeats, sometimes, we gain victories, but the value of these moments is much fuller of significances when we go through them together. We are in a crucial moment now. And it is good for us to ask ourselves ‘’what we have to lose if we stop on our way’’? As we know for sure that we do not want to return to the past and we do not want to stay. There will be difficulties on our way and there will be victories as well. It is important that each one, where he/she is, continues to believe, to fight, to work.  Let us do in such a way, so that we are not witnesses of our history, but its creators.    

We believe in Moldova and this unites us.  

In these last moments of a difficult year, but which we lived full of hope, I urge you and wish you to find as many as possible reasons for joy and pride for your own achievements, for the success of the dear people and for the success of the entire Moldova. Sometime, tortured by cares, we forget to be happy.    

Let us remember the things which unite us and make us happy – the hope that we will succeed, the gratitude to the people who are with us and the confidence that we can together edify a worthy future and in peace for all the children of Moldova.
