National Statistics Bureau explains purpose and importance of 2024 Population and Housing Census

Chisinau, 22 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) presented today clarifications on purpose and importance of the 2024 Population and Housing Census, thereby denying erroneous materials spread in some media.

The population and housing census (RPL) is a statistical survey of national scope, which is carried out in the country, once every 10 years. Data about people and homes is collected. There are also other censuses, with specific purposes, such as the agricultural one (the last one was carried out in the Republic of Moldova in 2011) or the enterprise census.

According to the BNS, the purpose of the Population and Housing Census is to produce and disseminate statistics on the demographic and socio-economic structure of the population, households and family units, the homes in which the population resides and living conditions, as well as the buildings in which they are located the homes. 

RPL data will help determine the share of homes with slate roofs that contain health toxics, as well as those vulnerable to natural disasters. These data will be used by decision-makers to develop policies to support the country's population in order to rehabilitate housing and build sustainable and safe housing. "The census will provide other indicators that are missing in the administrative data sources held by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova. Currently, in our country, there are localities where massive cadastral works are not carried out and, respectively, a good part of the houses are not registered in the Real Estate Register", estimates the quoted source.

In this context, the National Bureau of Statistics urges media representatives and the population to be well informed about the purpose and implementation of the census works, including on the basis of the various information available on BNS website www.statistica.gov.md
