Chisinau, 22 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Victims of the Holocaust have been commemorated through a flashmob held on the parliament’s square. The action, organized by the Culture Ministry, inaugurated the Remembrance Week, dedicated to the commemoration of the Holocaust’s victims.

According to the parliament’s communication and public relations department, the MPs, along with other officials and accompanied by young people, lighted candles in the memory of the Holocaust’s victims and stood silent for one minute. By this symbolical gesture, they showed solidarity with the suffering of the past and committed to keep alive the memory of those who experienced the horrors of the Holocaust.

„This was a tragedy, but unfortunately, the mankind does not learn from the passed tragedies. We must commemorate, speak to our children about the fact that these atrocities were committed, refer to both those who committed them and to those who gave a helping hand and saved lives, putting at risk their own lives,’’ Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said.

Moldova’s parliament condemned the Holocaust in July 2014, by adopting a political declaration on the acceptance of the Report of the International Commission for the Studying of the Holocaust, presided over by Elie Wiesel. The political declaration also condemns any attempt of ignoring or denying the Holocaust and pays homage to its victims and survivors.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is annually marked on 27 January. This was decided under a Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, adopted in 2005. In Moldova, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day has been annually marked since 2015, under a decision approved by the parliament.
