Moldovan PM meets farmers of Causeni district

Chisinau, 1 February /MOLDPRES/ - The measures undertaken by the cabinet to back the agriculture branch, as well as the best solutions to the problems in this sector have been discussed at a meeting of Prime Minister Dorin Recean with farmers of the south-eastern Causeni district, the government’s communication department reported.

The PM referred to the actions recently taken by the authorities, in order to financially assist the farmers hit by the natural calamities registered in 2022 and 2023 in the southern region of Moldova. To this end, the government will allocate 50 million lei from the intervention fund.

„We will continue identifying and allocating additional financial resources for the agricultural sector. Unfortunately, the climate changes affect the producers of cereals, especially the ones from the southern region. The government provides support; yet, in the new conditions, we must re-orient ourselves and access programmes the goal of which represent long-term investments in other fields, such as: animal husbandry or the vine-growing and wine-making sectors. These programmes will help us get out of the vicious circle subsidies-cereals-export,’’ Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.

Another subject of the discussion was focused on the cabinet’s immediate actions for the concrete support of the producers of cereals from Moldova. Many of them have been facing financial problems in the last 3-5 years, back before Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

„We know the problems of the producers of cereals. We will solve them gradually and we will continue to help targetedly all those who need support. The commission set up in last autumn has considered already 100 applications by farmers hit by the drought, who accumulated debts from creditors. Thus, 14 producers of cereals will get re-schedulings. The commission registers, in continuation, applications and calls on behalf of cereals’ producers. We continue the dialogue on all platforms available, through the Agriculture Ministry, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, including with our friends from Romania and the European Union,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.

The prime minister highlighted the increase in the number of applications submitted to the Agency of Intervention and Payments for Agriculture, noting that one of the fields in need of investments was the one of irrigation systems and water’s accumulation. Also, PM Recean urged the producers of cereals to insure their activity and benefit from state programmes which cover up to 70 per cent of the insurance policies.
