Constitution revision discussed in Parliament

Chisinau, April 8 /MOLDPRES/ - Today the parliamentary commission on rules and immunities held public consultations on the referendum to review the Constitution on Moldova's EU accession. Members of the Central Electoral Commission, as well as representatives of academia and civil society took part in the discussions.

The draft amendment to the Constitution proposes adding two paragraphs to the preamble of the Supreme Law of the country, reconfirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and declaring that integration into the European Union is a strategic goal of the country. It is also proposed to add a paragraph to the title "Integration into the European Union" referring to the accession to the constituent treaties and to the acts revising the EU constituent treaties.

"Today's consultations aimed at understanding whether the text presented corresponds to the necessary rigours. The Constitutional Court will give its opinion. Under the law, the Constitutional Court has ten days to give its opinion. After that, we will present a draft decision to Parliament. After registration of this draft decision, it is necessary to respect the six-month deadline. Afterwards, the citizens, at the voting booth, will decide, by their own conviction, whether they support or oppose it," said Veronica Rosca, head of the committee on rules and immunities.

The draft amendment to the Constitution will enter into force upon publication in the Official Journal of the Constitutional Court's decision confirming the results of the republican referendum.

The constitutional referendum on Moldova's EU accession was initiated by President Maia Sandu and will be held on the day of the presidential elections.
