Chisinau, Apr 16 /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova Mihai Popsoi today delivered a speech at the spring session of the PACE in Strasbourg. He reviewed the challenges facing our country and the achievements of the last period.

The official approached the authorities' commitment to defend human rights, fundamental freedoms and promote the functioning of democratic institutions in the Republic of Moldova, especially in this period of profound security challenges in Europe.

In his speech, Popsoi noted that our country faces several challenges. "First of all, the Russian aggression against Ukraine, which causes enormous destruction to Ukraine, but also has significant negative repercussions on the Republic of Moldova. Another challenge is the unresolved conflict in the Transnistrian region. Our position remains unchanged, we support a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict through negotiations based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognised borders. The third challenge is the external attempts to destabilise the situation in my country. The aim is clear, to undermine confidence in the government," the minister added.

"Now, I will mention the Moldovan people's desire to be a member of the European family. Building a European future together is the commitment of our people. Our objective is to unite our entire society around this goal. That is why we have come up with the initiative to hold a constitutional referendum at the end of this year in support of European integration. This will allow us to set common goals for the whole country and move together in the same direction. I would like to say that we will be truly honoured to hold the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers between 25 November and 26 May, which will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Moldova's accession to the Council of Europe. We look forward to making our contribution to further strengthening the organisation, making it stronger", he said.
