Chisinau, April 20 /MOLDPRES/- "Today we remember with pain the most traumatic phenomenon in the recent history of our country, which historians say was more terrible than mass deportations, according to the number of human lives lost in peacetime." Prime Minister Dorin Recean made the statements in the context of the Day of Remembrance of Victims of 1946-1947 Famine.

"Pain, suffering and despair - this is what hundreds of thousands of innocent people of all ethnicities felt during the famine organized by the Soviet authorities in 1946-1947 - a terrible wound that will never heal completely. The ruthless famine, brutally imposed and used by the communist regime as a tool of oppression and control immediately after the World War II resulted in the deaths of more than 123 thousand people in all regions of the country. Some 400,000 others were severely malnourished but survived," the Prime Minister wrote.

Moldova marks the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the 1946-1947 Famine on the third Saturday in April. This date was approved by the government in 2022 to restore the memory of more than 200,000 victims of the famine - an artificial famine created by the Soviet communist regime.
