Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan leadership today morning laid flowers at the Eternity memorial complex, in order to commemorate the people dead in the World War II.

Attending the solemn ceremony were President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and European Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn.

„We today commemorate our fellow countrymen who fought during the World War II, in order to bring again the peace on the continent. We celebrate the peace today, as 9 May 1945 was the first day of peace on our continent and we celebrate Europe as the most sustainable and successful peace project,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The head of state noted that 9 May was a day reminding about how vulnerable the peace is, how dramatic the war is and we must do absolutely everything, in order not to allow wars on the continent.

„We celebrate the peace and the European Union today, at the same time, as long as we remember the sacrifice made by our ancestors for us to be able to get peace. This is the day of peace and the day of commemoration and we, the Moldovans, commemorate our dead in peace. There are people who try divide us; but there is nothing which can divide us here and we should not allow anybody divide us,’’ the Moldovan president stressed.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the history must teach us that there are no winners in any war. ‘’All side lose and the most tragic thing represent the human lives which are lost and the grief and memory remain, which mark generations and destinies. This is an extra occasion to remember those who really contributed to the bringing of peace to Europe,’’ Grosu noted.

Moldova today, 9 May, celebrates the Day of Victory and of commemoration of the heroes who died for the Independence of the Motherland, as well as the Europe Day, under the decision on the commemorative days, holidays and days off in Moldova.
