MPs from EU countries mark Europe Day at Moldovan parliament's headquarters

Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s partners from the parliaments of the European Union member states have marked the Europe Day at the headquarters of the Moldovan parliament, where they conveyed the strongest messages of support for the country. The parliament today hosted a joint visit by the heads of the friendship groups of the parliaments of the European Union member states.  

The lawmakers discussed Moldova’s accession to the European Union and how the parliamentary institutions from the EU member states can support the country’s European future, by sharing from their experience. The MPs also referred to the benefits of the accession to EU, the lessons of the accession, noting that Moldova’s place was in EU, where it is expected.   

In the opening of the event, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu stressed that the European Union today was the biggest development partner, economic partner of Moldova. He thanked for the support provided to Moldova in implementing the European standards. ‘’Today, more than ever, we need, in continuation, your firm and reliable support for this choice. We have made resolute steps and we will quite seriously work in continuation on this way.’’    

Attending the discussions, European Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn reiterated that EU would continue to back Moldova on its way of accession. ‘Moldova’s citizens are part of the European family. Beyond the messages of support, EU provides also a concrete unprecedented support to Moldova, being the biggest supporter of the people. Starting from October 2021, over 1.2 billion euros has been made available to Moldova and about 900 million euros was mobilized through economic and investment projects. Also, over 80 per cent of the Moldovan households benefited from assistance for the invoices for energy. We have also now more opportunities opened for Moldova’s citizens. For instance, the taxes for roaming were cut and we now work to remove them,’’ the EU official said.      

The meeting was chaired by the head of the parliamentary commission for foreign policy and European integration, Ina Coseru, who thanked the EU member countries for the support provided in Moldova’s modernization. The main speakers of the event , - Deputy PM for Reintegration Cristina Gherasimov, MPs Radu Marian and Oazu Nantoi – referred to the developments on the country’s European integration way, projects implemented with EU’s backing, the present situation in Moldova’s economic and energy sector, fight against the misinformation, fake news and the hybrid war.    

Attending the discussions was also a group of 50 young ambassadors, who expressed intention to contribute to the promotion of the European Union in their communities.
