FAO to work out technical cooperation project in forestry for Moldova
Chisinau, May 5 / MOLDPRES /- The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today signed a technical cooperation project in forestry on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
"We have signed a very important document that provides $ 325,000 in assistance for the development of a project by the FAO, which will be applied to the Green Climate Fund. It is a project in the forestry field that will help us achieve the national objectives of afforestation of the country ", said Iuliana Cantaragiu, Minister of Environment.
According to the official, in the plan to plant one hundred thousand hectares in the next ten years, "this project will be one of the drops in the sea of needs that exist to achieve this goal."
"The project will provide assistance for the development of the local carbon trading market, which is a very important economic tool aimed at protecting forests, expanding forested land and maintaining existing ones. It is a tool used worldwide, which we want to implement in the Republic of Moldova because it will allow the conservation of biodiversity for a long period ", Cantaragiu explained.
For his part, Raimund Jehle, FAO Representative in the Republic of Moldova, mentioned that reducing the effects of climate change is an essential goal of FAO, important for the development of our country which will benefit from all the support in this regard.
The Food and Agriculture Organization is a specialized UN agency that leads international efforts to overcome hunger and develop the agricultural sector. The FAO leads the secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention and provides technical support to national supervisory authorities in implementing the provisions of the Convention at the national level.
