North-South railway corridor to be rehabilitated in Moldova; European Commission provides grant worth 20 million euros
Chisinau, 29 November /MOLDPRES/ - The railway corridor, Valcinet- - Ocnita - Balti - Ungheni - Chisinau - Cainari, with the overall length of 446 km, will be rehabilitated based on a grand worth 20 million euros. The European Commission will provide the grant within the European initiative on the facilitation of the import-export transport of goods for Ukraine. The cabinet approved a decision to this effect today.
The money will be used for the change of sleepers, rails and the metal ballast at the critical segments of the railway infrastructure. The North-South railway corridor is of strategic importance for Moldova. It connects the cities of Edinet, Balti, Ungheni and Chisinau with the ports of Constanta, Galati, Giurgiulesti, Reni and Ismail. Most imports and exports of Moldova are carried out through the port complexes.
The Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry noted that the project’s implementation would enhance the degree of safety in the railway traffic, would increase the speed of the passenger and freight trains and would shorten the trains’ rotation time.
