Moldovan president attends event on launch of new identity card for Moldova's citizens
President Maia Sandu today participated in the presentation of the identity card - the new identity document for citizens of Moldova.
“One million new identity cards will be provided free of charge to our citizens. With this document, any citizen, any entrepreneur, regardless of his/her location, will be able to access public services and sign documents online,” said the head of state.
Starting from April 2025, the new identity document of Moldova’s citizen - the Identity Card - will be put into circulation in Moldova. The first million identity cards will be issued free of charge to citizens, with a processing time of 20 working days. The new identity document will contain an electronic signature. Thus, cardholders will be able to authenticate in information systems and sign documents, applications or official declarations without having to visit public institution offices. Citizens who hold a valid identity card are not required to get the new identity card. Identity cards stay valid till they expire.
“The new identity card is also a step towards freedom of movement – after accession we will be able to travel to EU countries with this document only. Moldova has chosen the European path and I thank all those who, through concrete projects and initiatives, work to make this choice a reality,” concluded President Maia Sandu.
