
4,182 Moldovans suffer from cervical cancer - MSMPS reports
Chisinau, 25 January /MOLDPRES/- In the Republic of Moldova, the oncologist records 4,182 patients affected by cervical cancer, and about 300 new cases are registered annually. The data were made public by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection / MSMPS / in the context of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.
Dozens of private organizations and public institutions, including the Customs Service, the General Inspectorate of Police and the medical community, local public authorities, civil society, youth centers, Youth Friendly Health Centers, journalists and opinion leaders have joined forces to urge women to stay healthy. Thus, this year will focus on the concept of prevention, given that there are tools, such as vaccination and screening, which can significantly reduce the risk of this disease.
According to statistics, the awareness of women aged 25 to 61 years about the cytological test increased from 47% in 2018 to 62% in 2020, and the share of women who performed, as a result of their knowledge, the prevention test has doubled in the last two years.
Cervical cancer is 80 percent preventable cancer. This is one of the diseases in women that can be easily prevented by vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in adolescence and the cytological test, performed every three years, between 25-61 years, free of charge at the family doctor.
