Chisinau, March 21 / MOLDPRES /- Today Moldova marks International Day of Forests.

In a message published on his official website, President Maia Sandu announces that currently our country has only 11% of forests out of a need of 25-30%.

"It simply came to our notice then. But we are determined to make afforestation a priority for all. I've already taken the first steps. Last year, we created the Working Group for the preparation of the National Afforestation Program, which will be launched by the end of this year. The national greening campaign mobilized thousands of people of all ages in the fall. Let's continue this effort. In each locality there are degraded lands, strips intended for soil or water protection, on which trees and shrubs can be planted. I call on you all to lend a hand and become promoters of afforestation. I know the times are not easy at all. But the crises will pass, and we will be able to leave a green and clean country for future generations ", said Maia Sandu.

The United Nations declared March 21, 2013, the International Day of the Forest, in an opportunity to raise awareness of the role and importance of forests in everyday life. The intended goal is to create and strengthen the political commitment to achieving sustainable forest management in all countries of the world.

Statistics show that forests cover 31% of the earth's surface, maintaining a stable global climate. The forested area of Europe is 29%, and of the Republic of Moldova only 11%. Every year, more than 13 million hectares of forests are deforested worldwide, mainly for agricultural purposes, and these actions are responsible for 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
