STISC warns of spear-phishing campaign targeting Government institutions

The Information Technology and Cybersecurity Service (STISC) reports that it has identified a spear-phishing campaign specifically targeting government institutions in the Republic of Moldova.

According to STISC, the attacks aim to steal sensitive information and authentication data (Information Stealer/Credential Theft) by distributing malicious messages designed to persuade recipients to download and open dangerous files.

“The messages are sent from various email addresses associated with @mail.ru domain and contain archives in .7z or .zip formats. These archives contain .bat executable files presented under names that imitate financial documents, such as ‘Payment Order’ or ‘Paid Invoices,’” the cited source announces.

STISC urges public institutions, companies, and users to exercise increased vigilance when handling email correspondence and to follow cybersecurity measures to prevent the compromise of data and computer systems. It is important not to click on links or open attachments in suspicious messages, especially archives or files originating from unknown sources.

Also, carefully check the sender’s email address, even if the displayed name appears familiar or trustworthy. Do not disclose passwords, authentication codes, or other confidential information. Treat messages requesting urgent, unusual, or unexpected actions with caution. Report suspicious messages to the individuals responsible for information security within the institution or organization.
