Monument in memory of participants in liquidation of Chernobyl disaster’s consequences to be erected in locality of Moldova

Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ – The government today approved the decision to build a monument in Ocnita city in memory of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. Thus, the Cabinet of Ministers accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, presented on the basis of the Ocnita city council decision.
Thirty three citizens of Ocnita district participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, out of which 25 persons are still alive.
The decisions of the local public authorities to build the monument in the square on Independentei street in Ocnita "were approved on the basis of the request of the Chernobyl Union of Moldova Association with the support of the city's citizens who wish to pay tribute to their fellow citizens who suffered from this tragic event following the performance of a service in the interest of the state whose citizens were and are", notes the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.
In spring of 1986, more than 3,500 Moldovan citizens participated in the Chernobyl disaster recovery operations. Over 700 of them died. Many of those survived are disabled.
According to some data, at least eight districts of Moldova erected monuments dedicated to commemorating the victims of the Chernobyl disaster and other nuclear damages. The Government of Moldova offers traditional aid on the day of commemorating the nuclear catastrophe on 26 April. In 2017, the amount of MDL 1,000 received 2,570 persons who suffered and families of the deceased. Similar benefits, provided by the Chisinau city hall, benefited 950 people.
