U.S. officials support Moldova's European integration goal

Chisinau, 7 December /MOLDPRES/- Officials of the United States of America have announced a firm support of Moldova’s European integration. The statement was made during a meeting with the ruling coalition delegation, on a working visit to the USA.

According to a press release by the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), the delegation held the first meetings with Will Ballard Hurd, Texas State House Representative, Christopher Andrew Coons, U.S. Senator and Markwayne Mullin, member of Oklahoma State House of Representatives. The talks focused on issues of international interest, focusing on the situation in Moldova and the region.

During the meeting with Hurd, the sides considered issues on Moldova’s internal reforms and ensuring security of our country. In this context, he appreciated Moldova’s efforts on the way to the West, stating that “Russia is a concern for the United States”. At the same time, he regretted that “international agreements on the Transnistrian region (including the decision of the OSCE Istanbul Summit in 1999) have not been respected”.

For his part, Christopher Andrew Coons having a meeting with PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc said “he realizes the importance of Moldova in the region, including its role in relation to other countries in the same region, such as Ukraine and Georgia”. Coons also noted “he understands the efforts and progress made by our country, as well as the existing risks as regards the frozen conflict through which Moldova passes”.

Also, Markwayne Mullin said “he strongly supports Moldova’s European integration goal and fully backs the efforts to combat hostile actions on the part of Russia”.

 Plahotniuc made a presentation of the main governance reforms in 2016 and 2017, stressing the support that the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and European Union give to these reforms. He referred briefly to “measures to boost the business environment, reduce bureaucracy, strengthen financial and banking legislation and improve the functioning of justice”. Also, the dialogue focused on the efforts of Moldova for energy interconnection with the EU through Romania.

Regarding national security, Plahotniuc said “Russian troops are still on the territory of Moldova and our country insists on their withdrawal”.

At the invitation of the Democratic leader, the three US officials announced their intention to pay a visit to our country.
