National Bank of Moldova puts in circulation modernized banknote worth five lei

14:19 | 07.12.2017 Category: Economic

Chisinau, 7 December /MOLDPRES/ - The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) will put into circulation a modernized banknote with a nominal value of five Moldovan lei, on the territory of Moldova, starting from 11 December 2017, under a BNM decision due to be published in the Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial) of Moldova on 8 December.

According to the document, the modernized banknote, with a nominal value of five lei, will be accepted in all types of payments with no restrictions. The banknote will be issued in circulation gradually, as the stock of banknotes issued during 1994-2013 is exhausted.

At the same time, the banknotes worth five lei, issued in 1994-2013, will continue to serve as legal means of payment in Moldova, in parallel with the putting into circulation of the modernized banknote.

Under BNM’s ruling, the earlier issued banknotes will be gradually withdrawn from circulation, following their wear and deterioration.

Also, the modernized banknote will have new security elements.

The modernization of banknotes through completion with new security elements represents a procedure used by most central banks and it is usually undertaken once in 5-7 years. The move is aimed at diminishing risks of forgery, counterfeiting the national currency and is also prompted by the wear of banknotes.
